Understanding Matcha
What is matcha and how is it different from regular green tea?
Matcha is 100% stone-ground shade-grown green tea leaves from Japan. Unlike regular green tea where you steep and discard the leaves, with matcha you consume the entire leaf. That means up to 137 times more antioxidants, plus the full spectrum of L-theanine, chlorophyll, and nutrients.
Where is your Matcha sourced from?
We partner directly with multi-generational family farms, tea co-operatives and reputed matcha processors in Uji, Kyoto. We conduct quarterly visits to maintain standards and relationships.
What's the difference between Ceremonial and Commercial grades?
While Ceremonial and commercial grades are just marketing terms coined in the West, they broadly indicate:
Ceremonial Grade: This is the highest quality, made from the youngest tea leaves. It has a vibrant green color and a delicate, umami-rich flavor. It is best used for whisked hot tea, iced matcha lattes, or high-end beverages where the flavor profile is front and center.
Commercial Grade: Slightly stronger in astringency and lighter in color. It is robust enough to withstand high heat and mixing with other ingredients. Perfect for baking (cookies, cakes), smoothies, ice creams, and packaged FMCG products.
Which grade should I start with?
If you're making lattes or drinking it traditionally, start with Ceremonial. If you're baking or making smoothies, go Commercial.
How much matcha should I use per serving?
1.5-2.5 grams (about half a teaspoon) for traditional preparation or lattes. Adjust based on your taste preference.
How many servings can I have in a day?
Most people can tolerate upto 2-3 servings daily. Matcha contains 75mg - 175mg of caffeine per serving, so adjust based on your caffeine tolerance. However we recommend 1 serving only on a daily basis to not affect your body's tolerance and maintain caffeine sensitivity.
When should I drink matcha?
Morning for sustained energy, or midday as an alternative to coffee. Avoid late afternoon or the evenings if you're sensitive to caffeine.
Can I drink matcha every day?
Yes, as long as you're using quality matcha with no fillers or additives. Just pure shade-grown tea.
Is matcha safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Matcha contains caffeine and not recommended during pregnancy or during breastfeeding. However we recommend you consult your healthcare provider about appropriate caffeine intake during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Can kids have matcha?
Due to the caffeine content, matcha isn't recommended for young children. For older kids, use smaller amounts and consult a pediatrician.
