Houjicha, directly translated from Japanese as “roasted tea,” is a style of green tea known for its smoky, nutty flavor and warm light to dark brown color. These distinctive characteristics come from a unique production method. Tea leaves and twigs are gently roasted in a porcelain pot over a charcoal flame, then ground into a fine powder. Roasting creates houjicha’s signature aroma and hue while naturally lowering its caffeine content, making it a mild alternative to other green teas.

Our signature houjicha is crafted from stems and leaves of tencha from Uji and is slow roasted at a relatively low temperature to preserve the tea’s natural flavor and balance.

Questions, answered

What is hojicha?
Houjicha (ほうじ茶) means "roasted tea." Ours is crafted from the stems and leaves of Uji tencha, slow-roasted at a low temperature until smoky and nutty, then ground fine. The cup pours a warm, light brown — matcha's mellow evening counterpart.
Does hojicha have caffeine?
Naturally far less than matcha. Roasting mellows the leaf, leaving a gentle cup you can pour in the evening without unsettling your night.
What does hojicha taste like?
Roasted, toasty depth with warm caramel and nutty notes — smooth, mellow, and comforting, with a clean earthy finish.
How do I prepare it?
Whisk 2 g with hot water for a straight cup, or make it a latte — whisk into a small amount of warm water first, then top with steamed or iced milk. It pairs beautifully with milk, or stands quietly on its own.
Is hojicha good before bed?
It is the cup we reach for after dark — naturally low in caffeine, easy on digestion, and calming rather than stimulating. If matcha is your morning, hojicha is your evening.
How should I store it?
Sealed tight, cool, and dark. Refrigerate after opening and finish an opened pouch within a few weeks — the roasted aroma is at its best when fresh.
When will Hojicha be back?
Hojicha is between batches and returning soon. Orders are dispatched within 24 hours of stock going live, with delivery in 3–5 business days across India.
